Kumuni’s language courses are available at levels I, II, and III. They make use of a selection of online resources, such as Duolingo, Memrise, iTalki, and Teach Yourself, to offer students a fully integrated learning experience.

Language I goes from complete beginner (Grade 5) to intermediate (Grade 10). It thoroughly meets the Grade 9 and Grade 10 curriculum. Students complete the Duolingo course, learn 1000 words through Memrise, and write at least 10 entries on iTalki; at the end of the course, they have a short (~5 minutes) conversation with one of Kumuni’s language mentors. Assignments include creating a short skit and presentations on geography, culture, and art.

Language II thoroughly meets the Grade 11 curriculum. Students review the Duolingo course, learn another 1000 words on Memrise, write more entries on iTalki, and complete Teach Yourself’s Language Tutor textbook; at the end of the course, they have a short (~10 minutes) conversation with their teacher or one of Kumuni’s language mentors. Assignments include creating a menu and cooking food, researching history, and writing a short story.

Language III thoroughly meets the Grade 12 curriculum, then works on developing students’ language skills further through continued practice and active use with other speakers, through reading and writing online, through listening quizzes, and through regular speaking with Kumuni’s language mentors. Students bring their total words learned on Memrise to at least 3000, reach the highest level attainable on Duolingo’s course practice, and talk with speakers of their target language online. Assignments include reading The Little Prince, watching a move, and creating a news story, a children’s book, and a short film – all in their target language.
